A Guide to Preparing Your HVAC System for a Storm

Picture
When the stormy season comes, one thing that you want to do is protect your investments. This means protecting your home as well as the appliances inside of it. Below are some tips that you can use to help to protect your HVAC system during the stormy season.

Get Your System Inspected

Before the stormy season happens, one of the things that you want to do is make sure that your HVAC system is inspected. This will let you know if there are any problems before a storm hits. Is the system properly working? Is the system working efficiently? Having the inspection done is going to let you know what you need to know so that you can deal with any problems that may come your way.

Protect Yourself with Surge Protectors

When there’s lightning during a storm, it can have devastating consequences. When you have protection with surge protectors, this is going to help with protecting your system from damage from a lightning strike. Since the power that comes with these strikes is going to be unpredictable, you should assume that the surge that happens can damage your unit. Some power surges can make your unit immediately fail, and others can cause damage as time passes. That’s why having surge protection is essential.

Cover Your System Up & Strap the System Down

When you cover up your system using sturdy items, it’s going to give it protection from flying debris that happens during storms and prevent it from sustaining tremendous damage. When you cover the system using a wood material or a tarp, it’s going to shield your system. There are a lot of unknown substances that may cause harm to the unit, and you may not even know it happens. That’s why it’s important that you’re prepared.

Turn the System Off

A lot of people don’t consider doing this when there’s storm. But when you turn off the system before a storm, it’s a great way that you can prevent it from getting damaged. A good example is if you don’t turn the system off before there’s heavy rain and your home flood’s, the system’s electrical panels can be damaged beyond repair. So before the storm hits, it’s a good idea to turn off your system. This is particularly true if you’re in a flood-prone area or on the coast.

Before Hurricanes

The storms that are listed above are important to remember before any storm. But if you are in an area that’s prone to hurricanes, like on the east coast, below are three special tips that you can use before a hurricane.
  • Make sure you’re heating up or cooling down the unit before a hurricane. Why is this important? If you don’t have any access to your unit, you’ll be able to preserve the home with that extra air conditioning or heat. This is going to help your family and your pets be comfortable if the power goes out until help can arrive.
  • If you have window units, you want to make sure they’re unplugged and immediately moved indoors. You want to seal your windows before the storm hits. If you’re not doing this, you’re going to leave a weak area or entry point which can allow the surge of the storm to come into the house.
  • Turn your system off completely before a hurricane hits, particularly if you haven’t protected yourself with surge protectors.
These are the tips that you want to remember when it comes to big storms and your HVAC system. They will help you protect your investment and make sure that you are ready for anything a storm throws at you.
